ATC: OK-NRP number two following Aztec four-mile final, do you have traffic in sight?
OKNRP: Tower OK-NRP number two negative traffic.
ATC: OKNRP roger continue downwind I’ll call your base.
OKNRP: Roger tower OK-NRP you’ll call the base.
In the first transmission, ATC tells OK-NRP about an Aztec on four-mile final to follow. When OK-NRP doesn’t see the traffic, ATC responds by instructing OK-NRP to continue flying the downwind leg and wait for ATC instructions before turning ninety degrees to the base leg. The phrase “I’ll call the base” means “I’ll tell you when to turn” as well as, perhaps more importantly, “don’t turn until I tell you”.
Maybe OK-NRP will see the traffic before ATC calls the base. In this case, OKNRP would transmit: “Tower OK-NRP Aztec in sight”. ATC would then give responsibility for separation to OKNRP by transmitting: “Roger OK-NRP follow the Aztec base turn approved cleared to land”.
